Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent Reveals Increased Tension in Economic Conflict with Iran

US Treasury Implements New Sanctions on Iran

The US Treasury announced fresh sanctions on Tuesday targeting 14 entities linked to assisting Iran in acquiring weapons.

“The Iranian regime should be held accountable for exploiting global energy markets and recklessly attacking civilians using missiles and drones. Leaders, as part of our economic response, the Treasury will persist in tracing funds and focusing on the Iranian regime’s irresponsible actions and those who support it,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated.

These targets are located in Iran, Türkiye, and the United Arab Emirates and involve aircraft as per the Treasury Department. All 14 entities and individuals are accused of transporting arms and parts on behalf of Iran.

“As the U.S. works on diminishing Iran’s ballistic missile stockpile, there is a growing effort to rebuild their production capacity. Iran has increasingly relied on the Shahed series of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to strike the U.S. and its allies, including critical regional energy infrastructure,” the Treasury Department added.

In recent actions, the previous administration imposed sanctions on over 24 individuals, entities, and vessels involved in the smuggling of Iranian oil. On Tuesday morning, U.S. military forces intercepted a tanker in the Indian Ocean that was apparently carrying oil from Iran to China. The Navy also seized an Iranian-flagged ship in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, firing warning shots in the process.

Currently, a ceasefire between the U.S. and Iranian government is set to lapse on Wednesday, with last-minute negotiations reportedly stalled. Vice President J.D. Vance had planned to travel to Islamabad, Pakistan, for discussions with Iranian officials, but that trip is said to have been canceled.

Iran hasn’t disclosed yet if it will participate in the U.S.-led negotiations in Pakistan. According to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei, Iranian state television remarked that the U.S. Navy’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz was an “unacceptable” condition for continuing talks. Furthermore, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that the U.S. had breached the ceasefire by blocking the strait and seizing a tanker.

Both nations have cautioned that hostilities may resume unless a deal is reached.
