Week 6 Preview: College Football and Weather Concerns
As we look forward to Week 6 of the 2026 college football season, there are some exciting matchups lined up. The day kicks off with No. 21 UCLA facing off against No. 13 Oregon, followed by a high-stakes SEC clash between No. 2 Georgia and No. 6 Alabama in the evening.
However, there’s a bit of an unexpected twist to the weekend. Tropical Storm Isaias is making headlines, and it could throw a wrench into the SEC festivities.
This storm, which is currently swirling in the Gulf, is expected to strengthen into a hurricane before the week concludes. As of early Wednesday, Isaias had wind speeds of 40 miles per hour, and forecasts from the National Hurricane Center suggest it may reach hurricane status by Thursday morning.
Projected paths show the storm moving towards Mobile Bay and then heading north into Alabama by Saturday.
The Georgia-Alabama game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday night, so it’s something to keep an eye on.
The SEC issued a statement on Wednesday, indicating that they are monitoring the situation closely and maintaining communication with the involved schools as the storm approaches.
Forecasters are predicting that Isaias could strengthen into a Category 1 or even Category 2 hurricane, with sustained winds potentially reaching 110 miles per hour. Reports suggest that it could quickly intensify to at least a Category 2 by Friday evening in the central Gulf.
Weather experts believe that hurricane watches for the Gulf Coast might be issued later on Wednesday. Forecasts warn of heavy rainfall starting Friday, with some areas possibly seeing up to ten inches of rain.
That said, the storm’s exact path remains unclear. While it’s expected to drift east and then turn north towards the Gulf Coast, that trajectory is not yet guaranteed. Here are the latest “spaghetti models” for Tropical Storm Isaias, released Wednesday morning.
The SEC has been known to shift game schedules due to hurricanes in the past. The most recent instance was back in September 2022, when South Carolina rescheduled a game against Charlotte from Saturday to Thursday night, and Florida moved its game against Eastern Washington from Saturday to Sunday because of Hurricane Ian.
