Tragic Crash Involving Truck Driver and College Soccer Player
An immigrant truck driver from Uzbekistan has been released after facing charges related to a crash that resulted in the death of 21-year-old college soccer player Tobias “Toby” Forsythe in Madison County, Ohio.
Behzod Aslalov, 42, who speaks no English, was recently released from jail without bail. His attorney argued for his release by highlighting Aslalov’s lack of a criminal history and his previously “perfect” driving record before the fatal incident on July 5.
According to prosecutors, Aslalov was driving a semi-truck when he rear-ended Forsythe, who was operating a 2025 Honda Accord. The collision caused Forsythe to crash into the median of the interstate, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. He was remembered fondly in his eulogy as a “wonderful man” with a bright future ahead.
His obituary mentioned, “Tobias will always be remembered for his charisma, his constant concern for his friends and family, and his undying love for Jesus.” Friends and family noted how Toby’s determination enabled him to achieve heights his loved ones had never imagined.
Following the accident, prosecutors alleged that Aslalov stole the semi-truck’s dashcam before authorities arrived. Police discovered a camera in his pocket and, due to his language barrier, officers used Google Translate for communication.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy commented on the incident, underscoring the need for stricter regulations regarding driver’s licenses issued to non-English speakers. “Tobias ‘Toby’ Forsyth was just 21 years old, a star goalie on the Massachusetts Lowell School soccer team, and had his whole life ahead of him. His life was taken from him far too soon,” Duffy stated. He emphasized the danger of having drivers like Aslalov on the road, someone unable to read signs or communicate with law enforcement.
While expressing condolences to Forsythe’s family, Duffy vowed to fight against dangerous truck drivers, urging that no parent should have to experience such sorrow. Additional charges against Aslalov are anticipated as the case progresses.
