U.S. lawmakers are pressuring Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to tighten the country's loose migrant worker system, citing concerns about illegal immigration from the northern border.

“U.S. lawmakers are concerned about illegal immigration from Canada and have called for increased security on the northern border with Canada,” said Glenn Cowan, founder and CEO of security firm One9.

Trudeau has also faced backlash at home for loosening immigration policies, in stark contrast to his previous boasting about the influx of cheap labor.

“Two years ago, faced with the aftermath of the pandemic and severe labour shortages, we adjusted our temporary foreign worker program. It was something the business community needed,” Trudeau said. “But today's economy is very different than it was two years ago. Inflation is coming down. Jobs are growing. We just don't need as many temporary foreign workers anymore.”

Trudeau, trailing in the polls ahead of next year's election, has backed away from unpopular immigration policies and said he would “redeem all kinds of [migration] “We will continue to explore different pathways to ensure that Canada remains a country that not only actively supports immigrants, but also takes responsibility for helping them integrate and create a path to success.”

Additionally, Trudeau's new proposals would cut the number of low-wage workers Canadian companies can hire by 10 to 20 percent, with further restrictions expected to be announced later this year.

Trudeau's change of stance is in line with U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris' new, more aggressive stance on immigration as millions of people enter the United States illegally under President Joe Biden's administration.
