Treasury Department Unveils Trump Accounts for Family Investments
On Wednesday, the Treasury Department revealed the investment funds that families will be able to select for Trump accounts, designed to help invest in their children’s futures.
Once the program kicks off on July 4, the default investment for Trump accounts will be the State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 ETF (SPYM). This low-cost ETF closely follows the S&P 500 index, so it seems like a solid choice, given its broad exposure to the U.S. stock market. The Treasury noted it was chosen partly for its low expense ratio, which stays under the 0.1% limit defined by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act that established the Trump accounts.

The SPYM ETF will be the starting option for investors, but the Treasury has plans to introduce additional funds soon after the launch. Eventually, four other budget-friendly ETFs that monitor major indexes will be added to the available options:
- iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV)
- Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI)
- State Street SPDR Portfolio S&P 1500 Total Stock Market ETF (SPTM)
- iShares Core S&P Total U.S. Stock Market ETF (ITOT)
Assessing Growth Potential in Trump Accounts
The iShares IVV ETF offers another route to track the S&P 500, recognized as a key benchmark for the U.S. stock market, encompassing 500 qualified companies listed on domestic exchanges. Meanwhile, State Street’s SPTM ETF looks at an even broader market slice through the S&P 1500 index, integrating large, mid, and small-cap stocks.
Vanguard’s VTI ETF aims to follow the CRSP US Total Market Index, which also spans a mix of company sizes within the U.S. market. Similarly, the iShares ITOT ETF aims to track the S&P Total Market Index, covering all caps in the stock landscape.
Comments from Ted Cruz on Trump Accounts
The expected investment options will soon be accessible within Trump accounts. The Treasury plans to notify parents and guardians about how to adjust their children’s investment allocations.
