Trump accuses Putin of being dishonest during Cabinet meeting on Ukraine conflict

During a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, President Donald Trump expressed strong criticism towards Russian leader Vladimir Putin, calling for accountability. He made a sharp comparison between the military support Ukraine received during his presidency and that given under former President Barack Obama. “I gave them Yablins. Remember? While Obama provided them nothing significant, my administration sent crucial arms,” Trump stated. He argued that the ongoing conflict has resulted in unnecessary loss of life, emphasizing that “we hear a lot of nonsense from Putin, who, frankly, knows how to play the game.”

When Russia took over Crimea in 2014, Obama chose not to send lethal aid, offering only non-lethal supplies like blankets and medical equipment. In a notable shift, Trump later approved the sale of advanced weapons, such as Javelin missiles, to Ukraine.

Trump also connected the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan to Putin’s aggression, implying it signaled weakness. “I really don’t think Putin would have invaded if not for that disastrous operation in Afghanistan,” he said. “He likely saw an opportunity and acted.” While he openly voiced his dissatisfaction with Putin’s actions, he also noted having a “strategic” conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Interestingly, despite being critical of Zelensky, Trump acknowledged the significant aid Ukraine has received from both the U.S. and European allies, stating, “I’d say the Ukrainians have shown bravery, but they’ve also received the best military resources available.” He remarked that without this assistance, the conflict might have ended much sooner, potentially within days.

Moreover, Trump criticized the volume of aid sent under Biden’s administration, claiming that the support was disproportionate compared to what Europe contributed. “We’ve sent over $300 billion while Europe could have taken a bigger role,” he noted. This sentiment led him to reflect on the complexities of international support dynamics.

Finally, Trump assured that U.S. arms shipments to Ukraine have resumed, acknowledging the precarious situation. “I approved sending more defensive weapons because Putin doesn’t regard human life as he should. Too many are suffering,” he concluded.
