Trump achieves victory for U.S. farmers as China agrees to significant soybean buys

US-China Soybean Deal Announced

President Donald Trump revealed that the United States has struck a deal with China to resume soybean purchases, following a boycott that negatively impacted American farmers.

Trump stated, “We are very honored by the fact that President Xi has authorized China to begin purchasing large amounts of soybeans, sorghum, and other agricultural products.”

China, being the largest soybean importer globally, had leveraged the boycott in trade discussions. The purchase of two cargoes of soybeans resumed just before a meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, as reported.

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins described this acquisition as a “great start.” She added, “China’s purchase of multiple shiploads of U.S. soybeans today is a sign of progress. This deal is strong and a positive step for farmers.” She emphasized that this purchase, occurring right before the Trump-Xi meeting, conveys that America’s agricultural leadership is taken seriously worldwide.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Trump mentioned that China intends to buy “tremendous quantities of soybeans and other agricultural products immediately.” Although he didn’t provide exact figures or timelines, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was quoted saying that China had committed to purchasing 12 million tons of soybeans by January. He further noted that China is expected to buy at least 25 million tonnes annually over the next three years.

Bessent also suggested that Trump’s recent Asia trip could potentially attract $2 trillion in investments to the U.S. He commented that soybean farmers, previously seen as political bargaining chips by China, now have the potential for prosperity in the upcoming years.

Trump reflected positively on his meeting with Xi, describing it as “really great,” asserting mutual respect between the two countries which he believes will continue to grow. He stated, “We have many points of agreement, and we are close to resolving some significant issues.”

Moreover, Trump expressed that farmers would likely be “very happy” with this trade development and encouraged them to “immediately” invest in “more land and bigger tractors” to accommodate the anticipated demand.
