IndyCar Race Proposed for National Mall

The Department of Transportation is advocating for an IndyCar race to take place on the National Mall, coinciding with the America 250 celebration, as confirmed on Friday.

In support of this initiative, President Donald Trump shared an AI-generated video on Truth Social that depicted enthusiastic fans around the National Mall and showcased drivers racing through a course in Washington, D.C.

A spokesperson from the Department of Transportation described the event as “an unprecedented opportunity” that could highlight the country’s rich racing history. They noted it would also spotlight the National Mall’s beauty while potentially generating significant tourism revenue for the capital.

According to the spokesperson, “The Trump Administration is committed to revitalizing Washington, D.C., and this event exemplifies that commitment. We’ll work with our Congressional partners to highlight the positive impact on our district.”

IndyCar races typically occur on Sundays, but the schedule seems open after mid-August, suggesting potential flexibility for the race. The next race is slated for the end of August.

Neither the White House nor IndyCar has clarified if the race is confirmed yet. However, logistical challenges could arise, as advertising is restricted on Capitol grounds. The proposed track locations remain unspecified, though the video from Trump included iconic landmarks like the Capitol and Lincoln Memorial.

Key political figures, including House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have been informed about the proposal. If it comes to fruition, it would mark the second major sporting event in the nation’s capital for the America 250 celebration—joining a UFC event set for the White House on June 14, which also aligns with Trump’s upcoming 80th birthday.

UFC CEO Dana White brushed off any concerns about the event being perceived as “too political,” stating that nearly all fighters want to participate.

White further remarked, “I don’t see how you can get too political outside of the White House.” He reminisced that past presidents, regardless of political leanings, have been sports fans, and it hasn’t influenced the sports negatively.

The NFL is also involved with America250, featuring its logo on footballs during the upcoming season.
