Expansion of ICE Detention Facilities Continues
The Trump administration’s immigration enforcement agency is once again increasing its detention capabilities, this time in Louisiana. This follows similar expansions already made in states like Florida, Indiana, Nebraska, and Texas.
The newly established Louisiana Lockup facility, located in a state prison, was created in collaboration with that prison. It has added 416 beds to accommodate detainees. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has stated that this facility will mainly house individuals deemed the “worst of the worst” among those illegally in the country.
“If you’re here illegally, there’s a good chance you could end up in the Louisiana lockup,” an official noted.
On Wednesday afternoon, DHS Executive Director Kristi Noem, along with Attorney General Pam Bondi, ICE Deputy Director Madison Sheehan, and Governor Jeff Landry (R), are set to hold a press conference discussing the facility.
Governor Landry shared a strong message on social media: “Beware of any criminal illegal alien. Louisiana Lockup is where your time in the U.S. will end.” He emphasized that this facility is designed to detain serious offenders such as murderers, rapists, pedophiles, and drug traffickers. The aim, he said, is to protect families and communities, ultimately making Louisiana—and by extension, America—safer.
DHS has reported that 51 individuals have already been transferred to this detention center, illustrating the swift implementation of this new facility.
“Today, we are announcing a new partnership with Louisiana to further our detention space,” Noem stated, thanking Governor Landry for his cooperation in addressing the issue of serious offenders in the country. She hinted at other facilities like CECOT, known for holding suspected gang members.
In a nod to public awareness, the department suggested the use of the CBP Home App to prevent arrests and repatriation.
