Trump Administration to Process Oil and Gas Permits During Shutdowns

The Trump administration intends to keep processing oil and gas permits considered “necessary” even during government shutdowns, as outlined in the Department of Interior’s (DOI) contingency plan.

The DOI’s Emergency response plan states that oil, gas, and coal permitting will proceed “to the extent that such a plan is needed to protect human life and federal property.” However, various renewable energy projects favored by the Biden administration are set to be halted. Despite the Biden administration’s tougher stance on offshore oil and gas leases, it enacted a last-minute drilling ban on vast swathes of land while pushing to advance the federal leasing agenda.

“To safeguard human life and federal assets, relevant Bureau of Land Management (BLM) staff will be exempt from furloughs if their roles involve oil and gas permits/leases or coal energy leasing required for energy production,” the plan details.

Moreover, it notes that priority will not be given to wind and solar projects that the Biden administration has promoted, which aimed to support intermittent green energy sources through considerable federal funding.

As of Wednesday, government funding has expired, with some Democrats opposing the measures passed in the House, which adds uncertainty to future proceedings.

A prolonged lack of funding could greatly affect federal operations, with warnings from the White House that critical nutrition assistance programs for low-income women and children might cease on October 1.

Trump has reiterated that his administration revived American energy independence. He criticized the Biden administration for mismanaging energy resources, emphasizing that the focus is now back on maximizing domestic energy sources for a more affordable and reliable future. The surge in oil and gas lease sales is a testament to this shift.

The DOI has not yet provided any comments regarding this situation.
