New Military Zone Announced Along U.S.-Mexico Border

The Trump administration revealed plans on Wednesday to set up a new military zone at the U.S.-Mexico border in California.

The Department of the Interior indicated that around 760 acres in San Diego and Imperial counties will come under Navy control to “enhance ongoing border security operations.” This new facility is aimed at allowing federal agents to detain individuals who are suspected of illegally entering U.S. territory.

This area is described as a significant route for illegal crossings. It stretches from the western edge of the Otay Mountains Conservation Area to about one mile west of the California-Arizona border. The Navy is set to manage this zone for a three-year period.

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum mentioned that this initiative directly aligns with President Donald Trump’s key priorities. “President Trump has made it clear that border security and the restoration of American sovereignty are our nation’s top priorities,” Burgum stated. He added that this action fulfills that commitment. By collaborating with the Navy to address lingering security gaps, they aim to bolster the President’s policies on national defense, safeguard public lands, and ensure the safety of Americans.

High Traffic Volume Contributes to Security Challenges

The Department pointed out that the heavy flow of illegal crossings in this area poses a “significant national security challenge” as well as causes environmental damage. They believe that militarizing the region will improve border operations while reducing the ecological harm linked to ongoing illegal activities.

Coordination between the Interior Department and the Navy ensured that this move aligns legally with the original purpose for which the land was designated for border security by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1907.

In recent months, the administration has announced several defense zones in states like Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. There has also been a push to expand military authority along the southern border, including the deployment of federal troops and stricter regulations aimed at tackling illegal immigration, border security, and general criminal activity.
