Trump and Mamdani Meet in the Oval Office
In a media session at the Oval Office on Friday, Fox News’ Jackie Heinrich asked New York Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani if he still regarded President Donald Trump as a “fascist.” Mamdani started to respond but was quickly interrupted by Trump, who said, “It’s okay if you just say yes. It’s easier than explaining. I don’t mind,” while patting Mamdani’s arm.
This brief exchange concluded a discussion that touched on several issues including affordability, housing, and public safety, highlighting the tension between Mamdani’s past statements and the political landscape he now finds himself in.
Heinrich had pressed Mamdani on whether he stood by his earlier remarks that characterized Trump’s policies as “fascist” and “tyrannical.” In a noncommittal response, Mamdani mentioned his intent to cooperate with Trump “where we agree” to benefit New Yorkers.
Trump chimed in with a laugh, saying, “I’ve been told I’m much worse than a tyrant, but maybe I’ll change my mind.” The conversation had moments of potential collaboration as both men acknowledged shared interests. Trump noted that energy prices were dropping and he would urge companies like Con Edison to lower rates, while Mamdani expressed concerns over a “cost of living crisis” impacting families in New York.
The dialogue also shifted to international relations when Heinrich questioned Trump about his peace plan for Ukraine, asking how it would work if President Zelenskyy rejected it. Trump asserted that Ukraine needed to either accept the proposal or continue the conflict, reiterating that U.S. aid was contingent upon reaching a deal. He also mentioned that casualties in the conflict were “much higher” than what was officially reported.
On the topic of public safety, Mamdani shared his strategy of keeping around 35,000 NYPD officers while opting to redirect non-emergency calls to mental health professionals. Trump added that they both aimed to eliminate “very bad people” and make the city safer, emphasizing a desire for New York to thrive once again.
As the meeting unfolded, it became clear that Mamdani would face scrutiny in balancing his progressive stance with the realities of governance. Proud of his democratic socialist identity, he indicated he would adapt as necessary by collaborating with the Trump administration.
Trump lightheartedly remarked that the interaction had drawn more reporters than usual and expressed openness to future meetings. Mamdani echoed this sentiment, stating he aimed to find common ground for the benefit of New Yorkers.
The president later shared pictures of their encounter on social media, calling it an honor to meet “New York City’s new Mayor Zoran Mamdani.” The White House has yet to respond to requests for comment.
