Trump’s Warning to Iran Regarding the Strait of Hormuz
President Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, stating that the country would no longer exist if it chooses to close the Strait of Hormuz. He also mentioned that the United States might take on the role of the “guardian angel” for this crucial waterway.
In a speech delivered on Sunday, Trump conveyed his message to Tehran during an interview with Trey Yingst, Fox News’ chief foreign correspondent. He reportedly told Iranian officials, “If you shut it down, there will be no country,” emphasizing that they wouldn’t be able to return home.
The president suggested a potential U.S. intervention, saying, “If necessary, we may seize the Straits.” He also mentioned the possibility of imposing tolls if an agreement isn’t reached. Trump highlighted that the U.S. could take a fifth of the oil that flows through the strait and use that as compensation for acting as a guardian for nations in the Middle East.
This warning comes in the context of an existing memorandum of understanding that allows for 60 days of free transportation while negotiators work on a final nuclear deal.
The situation intensified over the weekend when Iran announced a blockade of the strait in response to Israel’s military actions against Hezbollah. However, U.S. officials have countered these claims, asserting that maritime traffic has not been halted.
Trump additionally responded to remarks from Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who stated that Iran would never cease uranium enrichment. Trump’s retort was clear: “You better watch your mouth,” he warned, suggesting that Pezeshkian needed to tread carefully or risk further U.S. action.
Meanwhile, discussions between U.S. and Iranian diplomats commenced on Sunday at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland, facilitated by Pakistan and Qatar. However, the strait remained closed to navigation as Iran’s Revolutionary Guards did not provide the necessary transit permits.
