Trump and Habba required to pay $1 million for baseless Clinton lawsuit

Court Ruling on Trump’s Lawsuits

A federal court has decided that former President Donald Trump and his ex-lawyer, Alina Haba, are still pursuing a $1 million penalty for what they labeled “frivolous” lawsuits against several individuals, including Hillary Clinton and former FBI Director James Comey.

This ruling from the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals revolves around a dismissed lawsuit filed by Trump regarding claims of Russian collusion. Initially, Trump was ordered to pay the hefty sum in 2023, but he and Haba chose to appeal this decision.

Besides Clinton and Comey, the lawsuit also targeted California Senator Adam Schiff and former FBI agents Peter Strzok and Lisa Page.

Ultimately, Trump and Haba, who is now serving as the attorney for New Jersey, will be responsible for paying approximately $938,000. This amount is set to be divided equally among the various individuals listed in the lawsuit.

Trump’s Additional Legal Actions

In a related matter, Trump has taken legal action against Iowa pollsters, and he successfully moved a case regarding the Des Moines registry office to state court, marking another legal win.

In the initial lawsuit, Trump alleged that certain celebrities collaborated to undermine his interests during the 2016 Presidential Campaign.

Judge Donald Middlebrooks expressed in a 2023 ruling, reaffirmed on Wednesday, that the lawsuit lacked merit. “This is a case that should never have been brought. It’s completely frivolous, filed in bad faith for improper purposes,” he stated.

The judge also highlighted Trump’s reputation as a skilled litigator who often uses the courts to settle scores against political adversaries, suggesting that he doesn’t just passively follow his lawyers’ advice.

Two defendants in the case had also claimed that Trump’s appeal was without foundation and sought further penalties, though the court ultimately disagreed with this request.

Update on Comey’s Case

Simultaneously, a federal court recently dismissed false statements charges against Comey. Judge Cameron Curry ruled that the accusations were initiated by an attorney appointed by Trump who lacked the necessary qualifications for the role.

To address this issue, Curry, a Clinton appointee from South Carolina, was called in to oversee the deliberations surrounding the authority of the U.S. attorney, leading to some complications for the Virginia judge handling the case.
