Trump and Netanyahu’s Ultimatum to Hamas
President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have pledged that Israel will take action against Hamas if extremist groups refuse to agree to the proposed peace deal.
On Monday, Trump announced a 20-point plan for Gaza, which Netanyahu expressed his support for during a press conference that followed their meeting in the Oval Office.
Trump emphasized that if Hamas turns down the peace proposal, Netanyahu has his backing to eliminate extremist factions.
“Israel will receive my complete support to eradicate the threat of Hamas, but we are hopeful for a peace agreement,” he stated.
During his opening remarks at the press conference, Netanyahu issued a stark warning to Hamas, making it clear that Israel would take decisive action if necessary.
“Should Hamas reject your plan and act counter to it after an initial acceptance, Israel will carry out the task independently. This can be accomplished effectively,” he warned.
He argued that ongoing attacks from Hamas, similar to the events of October 7, 2023, would continue if peace is not accepted.
“We would prefer an easier route, but action is required. All these objectives must be met because Hamas has not fought this brutal battle and sacrificed our best young men just to remain in Gaza and continually threaten us with atrocities,” Netanyahu said.
Trump’s 20-point plan indicated that if Hamas does not agree to the deal, Israel is positioned to establish a “fearless” region, transferring control from the Israeli Defence Force (IDF).
If extremist groups do accept the proposal, it requires Hamas to disarm and relinquish governance over the strip. Additionally, the plan states that Hamas members who agree to peaceful coexistence could receive pardons, enabling them to remain in Gaza or have safe passage to other countries.
