Trump and Vance Critique Democrats at Cabinet Meeting

During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance targeted Democrats, claiming they are trying to resolve the issues left by former President Joe Biden. Trump suggested that the term “affordability” has become a deceptive slogan for Democrats, stating that while they proclaim that prices are lowering, the country has actually experienced unprecedented inflation.

“The word ‘affordability’ is a fraud by the Democrats. They say that, and then they move on to the next thing, and everyone thinks prices are going down. No, we had the worst inflation in the history of our country,” Trump remarked in his opening statements. He mentioned that his administration has worked to curb inflation since he took office, but reiterated that there’s still more to be done. He expressed a desire for a further reduction in inflation while steering clear of the risk of deflation.

Flipping the narrative on affordability, Vance argued that Democrats ought to reflect on their performance. He noted that since Biden’s administration, American households have lost over $3,000 in income. Meanwhile, he proudly stated that household income increased by more than $1,000 during Trump’s term.

In a separate exchange, Vance expressed optimism for the economy, predicting that “2026 is going to be the year this economy really takes off.” He seemed to suggest that the Democrats, especially in Congress, need to reassess what exactly they think needs fixing.

In recent months, many leading Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have placed a strong emphasis on affordability, linking it to their recent electoral success. Jeffries criticized Republicans, claiming they have consistently failed the American populace on economic issues, insisting that living costs have spiraled out of control.

Schumer aligned with this perspective, pointing out that affordability appears to be a pressing concern for many Americans. He called out Trump and the Republican Party for exacerbating the situation, stating that while Trump views affordability as a “swindle,” families are searching for real solutions to high costs.

As various Democratic candidates have aimed their campaigns at economic concerns, such as those of New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill and Virginia Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic Governors Association has highlighted how these candidates focused on affordability as a central theme to their victories. Following his meeting with Trump, Zoran Mamdani, slated to be the New York City Mayor, also noted his intention to collaborate with the federal government on affordability issues, sharing a common interest in making New York more livable.
