Trump and Xi Agree to Ease Trade Tensions

After a meeting on Thursday, President Trump revealed a deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping aimed at softening the ongoing trade conflict. This includes the U.S. reducing tariffs while China pauses certain export controls and resumes soybean purchases.

Speaking with reporters on an Air Force plane, Trump noted that both nations decided to cut tariffs related to fentanyl from 20% to 10%, leading to an overall drop in import duties on Chinese goods from 57% to 47%.

“I’d rate this meeting a 12 on a scale from 0 to 10,” the president remarked, reflecting his positive outlook on the discussions.

In a social media post earlier that day, Trump elaborated on additional agreements, such as U.S. investments in agriculture and rare earth minerals. He expressed pride in China’s authorization to purchase various agricultural products, suggesting farmers might want to invest in more land and equipment. “I want to thank President Xi for this!” he added.

Furthermore, Trump indicated that China would ensure the smooth flow of rare earths and other critical minerals.

World leaders gathered in Busan, South Korea, on Thursday amid rising trade conflicts. The face-to-face meeting lasted nearly two hours, where Trump and Xi maintained a friendly dialogue before concluding their discussions.

However, prior to this meeting, Trump stirred controversy by announcing he would direct the Pentagon to initiate nuclear weapons testing. When questioned about it, he stated it was in response to other nations’ actions, noting, “We don’t test, but since others are, I think it’s appropriate for us to do so.”

This summit marked the last stop on Trump’s Asian trip. Before meeting Xi, Trump had announced a trade agreement with South Korea, which includes a $350 million investment in U.S. manufacturing in return for reduced tariffs.

During a recent visit to Japan, Trump shared that Toyota plans to establish new factories in the U.S., while the Japanese government intends to purchase a fleet of Ford F-150s. Additionally, he signed a peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.

In a supportive remark, Xi acknowledged Trump’s commitment to fostering world peace, reflecting on recent agreements and fragile ceasefires in various regions.

Trump also mentioned that the war in Ukraine was a significant topic during their discussions. “We’ll work together to find a resolution,” he said, while acknowledging the complexities of the situation. “It’s crazy, but he will assist us and we’ll collaborate on this issue.”
