Trump approves bipartisan legislation addressing serious issues of revenge porn and AI deepfakes.

Trump Signs Take It Down Act to Combat Deepfake and Revenge Porn

On Monday, President Donald Trump enacted the Take It Down Act, a legislation aimed at reinforcing penalties against the dissemination of deepfakes related to revenge porn and AI technologies.

This bill was introduced by Republican Senator Ted Cruz from Texas and Democrat Senator Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota. It garnered significant bipartisan support, passing through both the House and the Senate. The initiative seeks to hold individuals and platforms accountable for spreading non-consensual materials.

According to Trump, “This law is a powerful step in our efforts to ensure that all Americans, especially young people, can feel better protected from abused images and identities.”

The Take It Down Act is designed to empower victims, particularly young girls, to counteract the impacts of revenge and deepfake porn. Cruz mentioned that the bill allows victims to take action against those who intentionally share such content. “Individuals and large tech companies must promptly remove exploitative material,” he stated.

The new legislation criminalizes the intentional publication of deepfakes or revenge porn, mandating that platforms take down such material within 48 hours of notification. While many states already have laws against this non-consensual content, the Take It Down Act broadens these protections on a federal level.

Melania Trump emphasized the importance of this law during a press conference, stating, “This law is a powerful step in protecting all Americans from the abuse of their images and identities.”

In a statement, a participant noted his worries as a father of three young daughters, expressing concern over the increasing prevalence of deepfakes and non-consensual intimate images. He declared that this legislation represents a significant move toward protecting victims and enhancing online accountability.

The success of the bill has been attributed in part to the courage of victims who came forward to share their stories, aiming to put an end to such abuses online. Legislators involved in the bill praised the collaborative efforts in bringing it to fruition and thanked Trump for his decisive action in signing it into law.
