Trump Calls for Jail Time for Chicago Officials

On Wednesday, former President Donald Trump stated that Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker should face jail time for their lack of support for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. “The Mayor of Chicago should be in jail for not protecting the ICE officers! Governor Pritzker too!” he posted on the Society of Truth.

This came after Trump arrived in Illinois on Tuesday to address situations involving federal employees and property amid anti-immigrant protests. The Pentagon confirmed the deployment of 200 National Guard members for an initial period of 60 days, intended to protect federal functions and properties.

There have been skirmishes near an ICE facility in Broadview, with anti-immigrant rallies escalating. Reports indicate that about a dozen individuals were arrested in connection with these protests.

On Saturday, Secretary of Homeland Security announced plans for additional specialized personnel to be sent to Illinois following a particular incident where federal agents were reportedly surrounded by a group in a 10-car convoy.

In a strong retort, Mayor Johnson emphasized that Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops is “illegal, unconstitutional, dangerous, and wrong.”

In a further escalation of tensions, both Pritzker and Johnson filed a lawsuit on Monday aimed at stopping the Trump administration from deploying National Guard troops in Chicago and nearby areas.
