Trump Calls for Investigation into Ilhan Omar

President Donald Trump reiterated his demand for a thorough criminal investigation into Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, in a series of messages posted on Truth Social on Thursday.

In his posts, Trump pointed out that Omar’s net worth has now reportedly exceeded $30 million, questioning how a congressional salary could justify such wealth accumulation.

Omar, elected as one of the first two Muslim women to Congress alongside Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, has previously denied claims about her wealth, labeling them as “right-wing disinformation.”

“Congresswoman Ilhan Omar is worth over $30 million. There is no way such wealth could have been accumulated, legally, while being paid the salary of a politician. She should be investigated for financial and political crimes, and that investigation should start, NOW!” Trump wrote.

This represents a substantial increase from her asset filings in 2023, where many holdings were reported at far lower values, some even under $1,000. Currently, Omar is already the subject of an investigation by the House Oversight Committee regarding financial matters concerning her and her husband. GOP lawmakers are probing how their wealth has significantly escalated since Omar took office in 2019.

Questions have also been raised about Omar’s loyalty to the U.S. In 2024, she sparked controversy with a speech in Somali about a territorial dispute in the Horn of Africa, which led to a political rift with Minnesota’s attorney general, Keith Ellison. In her speech, she seemed to prioritize her allegiance to Somalia, implying that she was acting to ensure U.S. policies aligned with Somali interests.

“We Somalis are people who love each other … When the going gets tough, we are people who have each other’s backs,” she stated, as she addressed an audience concerned about U.S. involvement in matters affecting their homeland.

“The U.S. government will do what we ask it to do,” she affirmed, drawing applause from the crowd.

Initially, Ellison condemned her words, suggesting they undermined the progress of Minnesota’s immigrant community. However, after pushback from local constituents and progressive groups, he later defended her, attributing his earlier concerns to “slanted” translations.

Omar’s marital history includes her current husband, Tim Mynett, marking her third marriage. Mynett has been involved in various controversial business dealings, including previous consulting for Omar’s campaign. His previous marriage came to public attention due to allegations of infidelity with Omar, but the Federal Election Commission found no wrongdoing at the time.

In early 2022, Mynett’s ventures faced scrutiny when companies he was associated with were accused of misusing funds related to cannabis investments, as well as in a separate lawsuit involving alleged financial misrepresentations linked to a wine business.

Despite past financial struggles evidenced in records—indicating Mynett’s businesses were notably underperforming—their financial situation reportedly improved drastically by mid-2025. Omar and Mynett’s net worth is now estimated to fall between $6 million and $30 million.

Just months before this information emerged, Omar had asserted, “I don’t have stock or own a home and am still paying off my student debt,” emphasizing her limited financial resources.

She has also characterized ongoing claims about her wealth as part of a coordinated disinformation campaign against her.

The investigation into Omar’s district has been driven by allegations of fraud linked to the misuse of federal aid intended for Minnesota’s Somali population. Republican leaders are pressing for closer examination of financial disclosures related to both Omar and federal funding in her area.

Recently, Omar urged residents to join an “ICE out of Minnesota” rally, advocating for skipping work, school, and shopping to participate.
