During an interview, President Trump described the price increases on certain goods due to his trade policies as “peanuts” when compared with gas prices.
In her discussion on “Meet the Press,” NBC News’ Kristen Welker pointed out that factors like tires, strollers, and tariffs are causing price hikes in some cases.
“Sorry, it’s peanuts compared to energy,” Trump said, taking a moment before adding, “Energy accounts for 60% of costs. Energy is significant—”
Welker noted that Trump campaigned on the promise of reducing prices from day one.
“When I mention strollers going up, I don’t have specifics. But they say gas prices are falling. Gasoline is way more critical than a stroller,” Trump remarked.
According to AAA, by the end of Trump’s first 100 days last week, average gas prices had decreased by about 50 cents compared to the previous year.
In the meantime, Trump’s recent tariffs have stirred global markets, heightening tensions with longtime allies like Canada and the European Union, alongside growing anxieties regarding both domestic and international economies.
The steep tariffs, particularly a 245% increase on China, have prompted concerns about potential shortages and escalating prices.
During his interview with Welker, the president highlighted the positive aspects of his economic vision while addressing challenges he perceives under former President Biden.
“The Trump economy is thriving, while the Biden economy is struggling badly. He’s done a terrible job overall,” Trump asserted.
In a Wall Street Journal opinion piece on Sunday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent defended what he called Trump’s “economic rebalance,” amidst rising worries about economic management.
Bescent stated, “I want to make sure working families don’t get left behind in the upcoming era of economic growth, like many did last time.”
“In the first 100 days of his presidency, we laid the groundwork for balanced world trade, revitalizing American industry, and creating an economy where Wall Street and Main Street can prosper together.”
