Trump Urges Senate to Pass SAVE America Act Before Recess
In a post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump has called on Senate Majority Leader John Thune to ensure that the Senate remains in session rather than taking a scheduled break on August 6th until the SAVE America Act is passed.
Trump expressed his thoughts on the matter, stating that Thune should not let senators “leave town” without the legislation moving forward. He even suggested that the Senate should consider eliminating the filibuster, allowing Republicans to swiftly pass a range of initiatives, including the SAVE Act and budget measures.
“John Thune should not allow the United States Senate to ‘leave town’ until it passes the Save America Act or, far better still, TERMINATES THE FILIBUSTER… Remember, stupidity always brings LOSING & DEATH!” Trump wrote.
Trump has consistently urged Thune to eliminate the legislative filibuster, which requires a 60-vote threshold for most bills in the Senate. This requirement has posed significant hurdles for advancing the SAVE Act, among other priorities.
Despite Trump’s pressures, the voting landscape for the election integrity bill remains challenging in the Senate, where Republicans do not have the necessary votes to overcome the filibuster and some key GOP figures are hesitant to change established rules.
Over the weekend, Senators Mike Lee and Rick Scott expressed their preference for the Senate to stay in session until the election bill passes. Usually, the August recess is seen as an opportunity for lawmakers to campaign and connect with voters, particularly in election years.
Nonetheless, Lee advocated for working straight through the recess in a recent post, indicating that the needs of the country should take priority.
“The Senate doesn’t need a summer vacation as much as the country needs the SAVE America Act. Let’s cancel recess,” he stated.
