Trump: ‘Canada will face a 100% tariff if it agrees to a deal with China’

Trump Threatens Tariffs Amid Canada-China Deal

President Donald Trump has issued a warning to impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian imports if Canada proceeds with a trade agreement with China. In his remarks, he referred to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as “Governor Carney,” expressing concerns that Canada could become a “loading port” for Chinese goods seeking to bypass U.S. tariffs.

“If Governor Carney thinks Canada is going to become a ‘port of call’ for China to send goods and products to the United States, he is sorely mistaken. China will eat Canada alive and devour it completely,” President Trump stated on Saturday, further threatening immediate tariffs if the deal goes through.

Recently, Canada secured an agreement reducing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for lowered duties on its agricultural exports. However, tensions have escalated between Trump and Carney, particularly after Trump suggested Greenland is vital to the U.S., to which Carney replied that Canada exemplifies resilience against authoritarianism.

In light of these developments, Trump rescinded Canada’s invitation to join a U.S.-led “Peace Commission” focused on managing the situation in post-war Gaza.

Carney responded to Trump’s comments via social media, asserting Canadian sovereignty. “Canada thrives because we are Canadians. We are masters of our country,” he wrote.

The prime minister had recently visited China, where he met President Xi Jinping and announced a “new strategic partnership.” This included reduced tariffs on Canadian electric vehicles and lower tariffs for various Canadian exports like lobsters and peas, aiming to strengthen trade ties amid global uncertainty. It’s a strategic move for Canada to lessen its dependence on the U.S.

As of now, Canadian officials have not addressed Trump’s threats. A potential 100% tariff would significantly impact the longstanding trade relationship between the U.S. and Canada, which is valued at over $800 billion annually.
