Trump Claims Iran Struck South Korean Vessel in the Strait of Hormuz

Korean Cargo Ship Reports Fire and Explosion

The Korean cargo ship “HMM” reported a fire and explosion near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. In response, President Donald Trump expressed on social media that Iran was behind the attack and called for South Korea to join an international effort to safeguard the strait from Iranian threats.

The Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided details about the incident, which occurred while the Panamanian-flagged vessel was anchored near the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Strait of Hormuz, adjacent to both Oman and Iran. The ship has a crew of 24, consisting of 6 Koreans and 18 others, and fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far. South Korean maritime authorities are working with rescue agencies from various regional countries, including the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, to coordinate assistance.

According to HMM representatives, the fire began on the port side and was followed by an explosion in the engine room. They mentioned that it’s still unclear whether this incident resulted from an external attack or an internal malfunction. The engine room’s position, down at the bottom of the vessel, complicates firefighting efforts, leading to delays in extinguishing it.

The South Korean government emphasized it would maintain contact with relevant nations about the situation, ensuring the safety of South Korean ships and crews in the region. Meanwhile, the presidential office noted that it was uncertain whether the explosion was indeed an attack, and there hasn’t been a convening of the National Security Council yet to address this issue.

The Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries suggested that the explosion could have been caused by a maritime drone or a sea mine. Trump, seemingly certain of Iran’s culpability in this incident, remarked in a post that Iran has previously attacked unrelated nations concerning the “Project Freedom” initiatives, including targeting South Korean ships. He encouraged South Korea to participate in this mission.

Project Freedom, which Trump promotes, is an initiative where the U.S. Navy plans to provide “guidance” to international vessels navigating through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump noted on social media that seven small boats, or “fast boats,” have been shot down as part of this project, with no reported casualties among ships using the strait, aside from Korean vessels. Further announcements about Project Freedom were promised by Trump to be discussed at a news conference soon.

If this incident is confirmed as an attack, it would mark another in a series of recent attacks on commercial shipping in the region, being the first involving a South Korean ship since the beginning of Operation Epic Fury. Trump also referenced previous drone attacks on a tanker and a bulk carrier just a day prior.
