Former President Trump said Sunday that he has significant support from Democratic voters who secretly support him and predicted a landslide victory in 2024 amid lack of enthusiasm among President Biden’s supporters.
In an interview with Howard Kurtz on Fox News’ “Media Buzz,” President Trump said “hope” distinguishes him from Biden.
“When you drive down the streets of Florida or the streets of Alabama, you see Trump signs everywhere, so there should be an appeal,” Trump said. “They’re looking for hope. They want hope. There’s no hope for Biden. He’s a dead end.”
The Biden campaign has struggled to drum up enthusiasm among voters, appealing to them primarily by portraying President Trump as a danger to the country’s future.
“I think more Democrats are voting for me than you think,” Trump continued, predicting that 10 to 12 percent of registered Democrats would support him.
“I have a theory: The people of Beverly Hills are voting for me, but we won’t talk about it,” Trump said. “Many people are voting for me.”
He said the former president’s theory was reflected in exit polls from the 2016 election.
“It wasn’t a big win.” [in exit polls] Because there’s a group that says, “Don’t ask me.” Stop asking that question,” President Trump said. “Essentially, the people who say, ‘Don’t ask me,’ are Trump supporters. And that was the largest number of people who ever voted, ‘Don’t ask me that.’ ”
Polls show that few Democrats are expected to vote for Trump. An Ipsos poll released last week found that just 0.9% of voters who supported Biden in 2020 will vote for Trump in November. Similarly, only 0.5% of former Trump voters said they would vote for Biden.
The two candidates are tied in national polls, with Mr. Trump holding a narrow 1-point lead over Mr. Biden, according to Hill/Decision Desk Headquarters polling averages. If third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is included, that lead increases to just over two points, according to the average.
