Former President Donald Trump mentioned that advancements in the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine hinge on a meeting with President Vladimir Putin.
Trump suggested that having a US president involved could potentially make a difference, especially after Putin did not respond to a Ukrainian request in Istanbul today.
Reflecting on the situation, Trump stated:
“He wouldn’t engage if I wasn’t present, and I believe nothing will progress until we meet, like it or not.”
He further emphasized, “Nothing will occur until Putin and I sit down together,” reinforcing his stance.
Ukrainian President Zelensky arrived in Turkey this morning and criticized the Turkish leadership for not detaining the Russians, asserting, “I’m here. This sends a very clear message.”
Zelensky remarked that Putin displayed “personal disrespect” toward Turkish President Erdogan and that such behavior undermines Russia’s credibility in appealing for peace to its Western allies, who continue to supply arms to pressure Moscow.
He noted, “After witnessing the demeanor of the Russian delegation… I regrettably concluded that they were not earnest about negotiations.”
The next steps remain uncertain. While neither Ukraine nor Russia has claimed that talks are off, Ukraine has consistently stated that discussions with anyone below Putin are futile.
The meeting was meant to kick off on Thursday morning but has faced multiple delays. Even though Zelensky is expected to depart tomorrow, it could still commence overnight or on Friday morning.
This situation is ongoing and continues to evolve.
