Trump’s Meeting with Putin and Domestic Actions

President Donald Trump wrapped up the 30th week of his second term with a pivotal meeting alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, aiming to address the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Although no peace agreement was reached, Trump expressed optimism, mentioning that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky would travel to the White House on Monday.

Despite the lack of immediate resolution, Trump stated, “It was clear to everyone that the ideal approach to conclude this distressing war is to pursue a direct peace agreement.” He described the exchange with Putin as “very warm,” suggesting that progress could be on the horizon. If talks with Zelensky in Washington go favorably, a trilateral discussion involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine may be set up soon.

During an exclusive chat with Fox News, Trump remarked, “I can assure you, the meeting was very warm. Putin is a strong and tough leader, but our dialogue was cordial between two significant nations.”

Crime Control Initiatives

On Monday, Trump announced plans to deploy around 800 National Guard troops and take control of the metropolitan police station to combat crime in Washington, D.C. This follows an earlier surge of federal law enforcement presence over the weekend. “The National Guard will help restore law and order in D.C.,” Trump told reporters, asserting that they would be empowered to do their jobs effectively.

Initially, Trump proposed designating the metropolitan police as federal entities and indicated that, on August 6, the National Guard would be sent in response to rising crime levels. However, officials in Washington have already challenged this federal takeover through a lawsuit, claiming it oversteps legal boundaries.

Washington Attorney General Brian Schwarb stated, “By declaring the acquisition of the MPD unlawful, the administration is misusing its limited powers temporarily under the law. This poses a severe threat to Home Rule in D.C., and we intend to contest it.”

Smithsonian Museums Review

In another development, the White House communicated with the Smithsonian on Tuesday regarding a planned review of its museums and exhibits as the U.S. approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026. “We want the museum to represent our nation honestly,” Trump remarked, emphasizing the necessity for fair representation of American history—both its positive and negative aspects.

The review aims to assess the tone and historical context of exhibits and materials to ensure that they align with American ideals. A letter from the White House indicated the initiative seeks to celebrate American exceptionalism while removing divisive narratives.

In response, the Smithsonian confirmed it would collaborate with the White House and relevant authorities during this review process, reaffirming its commitment to academic rigor and accurate historical representation.
