Trump Cornering Iran at the United Nations Security Council

Iran may have turned down President Donald Trump’s offer for a ceasefire, but this week could bring significant developments for Iran at the UN Security Council.

On Monday evening, Trump declared that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire during what they termed a “12-day war.” This announcement came just before a meeting that aimed to discuss potential resolutions. However, Iran did not acknowledge this agreement.

The timing of Trump’s announcement was notably strategic—he made it just ahead of a Security Council meeting where a draft ceasefire could be debated. This may have put Iran in a tight spot regarding the continuation of the conflict.

Earlier on Sunday, the Security Council convened due to US airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, with Russia and China advocating for an end to hostilities between Iran and Israel. The US military involvement had entered its 10th day at that point.

Now, the Council is poised to vote on the ceasefire resolution this week, following a rejection of a previous proposal that called for ending the conflict in Gaza without condemning Hamas.

The Security Council is expected to discuss non-proliferation issues as early as Tuesday.

While Iran may be hesitant to agree to a ceasefire with either Israel or the US, the Security Council possesses the authority to enforce binding resolutions. If Iran continues its attacks, it risks global condemnation.

Ultimately, the 12-day conflict might conclude unfavorably for the Iranian regime, potentially undermining its nuclear ambitions. In this scenario, both Israel and the US would likely come out ahead, backed by international support.
