Trump Critiques Ilhan Omar at White House Press Conference

During a press conference on Tuesday, President Donald Trump criticized Representative Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) over her significant wealth, which has reportedly surged in recent years. Omar, a Somali-born lawmaker, has faced scrutiny amid an ongoing investigation by the House Oversight Committee led by congressional Republicans.

Trump labeled Omar “crooked,” pointing out that her net worth has allegedly increased by $30 million in just a year, as highlighted in financial disclosures released last week. He remarked, “I was told Ilhan Omar was worth $30 million. She’s never had a job. She’s a crooked council member. So here’s another issue.”

He continued, expressing concerns about missing funds in Minnesota, saying, “Nobody talks about the fact that there’s at least $19 billion missing in Minnesota. Can you imagine? And those who do manage to get money somehow end up driving fancy cars.” It was a bit of a ramble, but it seemed he was trying to connect the dots regarding wealth and opportunity.

Earlier this year, Omar took to social media to reject the billionaire label, insisting that her assets were “barely” thousands rather than millions, and expressed that she was under investigation. The Republican Oversight Chairman, James Comer, noted that inquiries are targeting both Omar and her husband, Tim Mynett, who is politically connected.

In her financial disclosures, Omar indicated that her business, Rose Lake Capital LLC, is valued between $5 million and $25 million in 2024, a significant leap from its previously listed worth of between $1 and $1,000 a year earlier.

Trump also took the opportunity to discuss his accomplishments during his second term, including a crackdown on crime in Minnesota, and accused the state of having rampant fraud linked to its Somali population. It felt somewhat disconnected, like he was pivoting away from the main topic at hand.

He further commented, “Ilhan Omar, she’s from Somalia, which is an underdeveloped country. But she wants to come here and tell us how to run this country. I can’t stand her.” There was a certain intensity in his words that made it clear how he feels about her presence in politics.

Notably, alongside the investigations from House Republicans, it appears that officials within the Trump administration are also looking into Omar’s financial dealings.
