Recent violent riots have erupted across France, with hundreds of thousands participating in protests demanding improvements in the educational system.
What began as protests in Paris last month has now escalated into nationwide demonstrations, leading to instances of arson, numerous injuries, and thousands of arrests.
Initially, the unrest stemmed from student complaints about teacher shortages, lengthy school days, and poor infrastructure, but it has since turned into a broader regional crisis.
On Monday evening, French Education Minister Édouard Geffray announced that 190 students had been injured during the protests, which included a report of a 15-year-old boy who allegedly “lost a hand” during clashes with riot police in Lens.
Additionally, Geffray mentioned that 24 schools in France had been “burned and ransacked” since the demonstrations began in September, with over 5,000 arrests made so far, including 87 minors.
Despite previously acknowledging that the movement was initially “legitimate,” France’s Interior Ministry has now asserted that the unrest has evolved away from a genuine expression of student grievances.
On Tuesday morning, President Donald Trump shared on Truth Social that these riots represented “nothing less than out of control mass migration.”
“What’s happening in France is nothing less than out of control mass migration,” Trump commented. “This isn’t about schools; this is about Islam wanting to take over a once great country!”
The situation is quickly becoming a significant topic in the upcoming campaign to replace President Emmanuel Macron next May.
Far-left presidential candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon has criticized the government’s handling of the crisis as oppressive. Meanwhile, his party, La France Insoumise (LFI), faces accusations of attempting to exploit the chaos for political gain and inciting violence, as reported.
Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right National Rally, has also weighed in, denouncing the left’s reaction to the widespread violence.
“This is no longer about high school student protests. It is about riots organized by professionals and overseen by deputies from La France Insoumise,” she claimed, advocating for the passage of a new anti-rioting law.
As tensions continue, various reactions are surfacing, highlighting the complexity of the situation.
