Trump to Honor Hockey Goaltender Hellebuyck with Medal of Freedom

President Trump has announced plans to present the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award, to Connor Hellebuyck, the American men’s hockey goaltender.

Hellebuyck made a remarkable save during the second period of Team USA’s match against Canada, a critical moment that helped secure the Olympic gold medal with a narrow 2-1 victory.

Images showcasing the impressive play by Canadian defenseman Devon Toews have quickly gained traction online.

“I asked him, ‘Is that a shot where you put the stick in the back and it bounces off the neck of the stick? Do you practice that?’” Trump reflected on Tuesday evening. “Or maybe I just got lucky?”

He emphasized the significance of the Medal of Freedom to its recipients.

“I will soon be presenting Connor with this highest civilian honor, which has been awarded to many athletes through the years,” he stated.

“When I say many, I don’t mean an overwhelming number, perhaps around a dozen. This, after all, is the Presidential Medal of Freedom,” he elaborated.

During his State of the Union address, Trump praised the team for clinching the first U.S. men’s hockey gold medal in 46 years.

The House of Commons erupted in applause as the athletes arrived, proudly displaying their Olympic gold medals.

This moment followed Team USA’s visit to the White House, where Trump had asked the athletes to vote on whether Hellebuyck should receive the medal. The unanimous response was a resounding “yes.”

“The members of this great hockey team will be thrilled to hear, based on their vote and my vote. In this instance, my vote was more significant than my soon-to-be award for Connor,” Trump remarked.

“A great athlete has truly received the best recognition, and I felt he deserved it. And yes, I voted,” he added.

Fans have affectionately dubbed Hellebuyck the new “Secretary of Defense,” recognizing his stellar performance throughout the competitions in Milan, where he maintained an impressive .956 save percentage. His skills particularly shone in the gold medal match, making 41 saves out of 42 shots, including crucial stops against stars like Connor McDavid and Macklin Celebrini.

The men’s hockey team celebrated its first Olympic gold medal since the famed Miracle on Ice in 1980.

On Tuesday in the Oval Office, winger Matthew Tkachuk, who is also a member of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, presented Trump with a gold medal.

“I’m not going to give it back,” Trump quipped while wearing the medal, eliciting laughter from Tkachuk’s teammates.
