Trump delays intended military action against Iran, points to advancements in peace negotiations.

Allies of the US opt out of military involvement in securing the Strait of Hormuz

Trump Delays Military Action Against Iran

On Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced a two-week delay in military actions against Iran. This decision followed discussions with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Trump stated that the request from these leaders led the U.S. to pause its “destructive forces” targeted at Iran. Previously, he had indicated that troops might be deployed by 8 p.m. ET if an agreement wasn’t met.

The postponement hinges on Iran agreeing to completely and immediately open the Strait of Hormuz.

Mixed Offers from Iran

Trump claimed that Iran had made “significant offers” in response to an ultimatum, but deemed them “not enough.” He described this situation as a two-sided ceasefire. In a post on Truth Social, he noted that the U.S. had already achieved its military objectives and was nearing a long-term peace agreement with Iran and the broader Middle East.

The administration purportedly received a ten-point proposal from Iran, which officials see as a fair starting point for negotiations.

According to Trump, “The U.S. and Iran have reached a consensus on nearly all prior issues, and we will finalize and sign the agreement in two weeks.” He expressed a sense of pride in representing the U.S. during this critical period.

Iran’s Response

The Supreme Council for National Security in Iran issued a statement praising Sharif and Munir for their efforts aimed at achieving peace in the region. They indicated a willingness to suspend defensive actions, provided attacks on Iran cease.

Iran also conveyed that safe passage through the Strait would be feasible within two weeks, relying on coordination with its armed forces.

Additionally, Israel agreed to pause its operations in Iran as part of this last-minute arrangement.

Sharif commented that this ceasefire applies universally, including Lebanon, and is effective immediately. He expressed gratitude to both leaders and invited delegations to Islamabad for further negotiations on April 10, 2026. He voiced hope that these talks would culminate in sustainable peace.

Next Steps

The White House emphasized that discussions were ongoing about a potential in-person meeting, though nothing has been firmly established yet. Press Secretary Caroline Levitt stated that an official announcement would be necessary to confirm any developments.
