President Donald Trump recently commented on a peculiar situation that arose during his trip to Scotland. Reports surfaced suggesting that the Secret Service tried to sneak his wife onto a cargo plane designated for the president’s travel. Trump described the incident as “a strange deal” and mentioned that the agency was addressing the issue. “I don’t know, that’s odd. I heard it just two minutes ago. I think Sean is taking care of it… is that serious?” he remarked, seemingly referring to Secret Service Director Sean Curran.
When Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for clarification, there was no immediate response regarding whether Trump had been briefed on the matter or the ongoing investigation. It was Real Clear Politics that initially reported this unusual attempt by Secret Service agents. In light of the situation, the agency confirmed that a personnel investigation is underway. A spokesperson stated, “The Secret Service in the US is conducting a personnel investigation after an employee attempted to invite a spouse, a member of the US Air Force, to a mission support flight.”
According to the spokesperson, the aircraft, operated by the Air Force, was being used to transport personnel and equipment at the time. “Before departing overseas, employees were informed by their supervisors that this type of behavior was prohibited, and their spouses were subsequently barred from boarding the plane. There were no Secret Service agents onboard, and this did not affect overseas protection operations,” they added.
The Secret Service is currently under increased scrutiny, especially following a July 2024 assassination attempt against Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. During that incident, a shooter fired several rounds from a rooftop during a campaign rally, narrowly missing Trump and tragically killing a firefighter named Corey Comperatore.
Another individual was arrested later for a separate assassination attempt at Trump International Golf Club in Florida. Both incidents are still being investigated, and a bipartisan house task force has concluded that the attack in Pennsylvania was “preventable,” pointing to a series of repeated mistakes.
In response to these events, the Secret Service has made various changes to improve security protocols. These updates include increased drone usage for surveillance and an overhaul of communication systems between Secret Service personnel and local law enforcement agencies.
