Trump Describes Complex Rescue Operation in Iran
During a press conference on Monday, President Donald Trump shared insights about a notable rescue mission that he characterized as the “most challenging and complex” in the history of U.S. special operations.
He recounted how a “heroic F-15 weapons systems officer” managed to survive after their F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down over Iran. The two crew members were separated by several miles. While the pilot was recovered hours later, the other crew member was still missing, prompting a significant rescue effort.
Trump revealed that the airman evaded capture for nearly 48 hours, a challenging ordeal especially given his injuries. “That’s a long time when you’re sick and bleeding,” he noted.
Despite his wounds, the officer “climbed up a cliff, bleeding quite profusely, tended to his own wounds, and contacted the U.S. military to inform them of his location,” Trump said.
He described the advanced equipment used in these missions, stating, “They always have very sophisticated buzzer-type equipment…it’s essential that it has enough battery space and is in good condition. And it worked really well; it saved his life.”
Trump detailed the mobilization of a large-scale operation to rescue the airman from the difficult terrain. He mentioned that the rescue operation involved an extensive array of 155 aircraft, including bombers, fighters, and rescue planes.
Challenges arose from the sand conditions affecting equipment, which led Trump to implement a contingency plan for the mission.
“We were concerned about take-off due to the weight of the plane,” he said. “So we all piled onto the plane but ran into trouble. Thankfully, a lighter, faster plane arrived and they were able to take him away. We had to blow up the old plane since it contained equipment we didn’t want the enemy to access.”
He expressed gratitude to the U.S. military personnel involved in the operation, highlighting that they faced competition from Iranian troops and civilians trying to locate the U.S. airmen.
Trump concluded with a reflection on the event, stating, “God was watching over us.” He suggested that despite the challenges, luck was on their side, especially given the damaged enemy equipment encountered during the mission.
