Former President Donald Trump announced that the United States will send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom he described as a “good talker” who then bombs at night.
Trump’s comments came ahead of a meeting with NATO Executive Director Mark Latte scheduled for Monday and Tuesday during his visit to Washington, D.C. Recently, Trump disclosed a new NATO arrangement that would facilitate military support to Ukraine.
“I’ll meet with the Executive Director tomorrow. We’re set to send them various advanced military components,” Trump said to reporters on Sunday. “They’ll cover the costs 100 percent, which is how we prefer to do it.”
He added, “I still have my reservations about that figure, but they require defense. The European Union is covering the costs. We’re basically not paying anything for this, which is good for us as they are in dire need.”
Trump remarked, “Putin has surprised many; he spins a good yarn, yet bombs others at night. That’s a real issue; it’s not something I approve of.” He emphasized the role of NATO in supplying weapons to Ukraine, asserting that all costs would be borne by NATO.
In recent developments following pressure from defense officials regarding U.S. ammunition stockpiles, the Pentagon initially halted shipments of crucial military supplies to Ukraine. However, this decision was reversed within a week.
Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell stated, “At President Trump’s direction, the Pentagon has dispatched additional defensive armaments to Ukraine, enabling the Ukrainians to defend themselves while pursuing lasting peace and putting an end to the violence.” He also noted that the framework set by the President for evaluating military shipments globally remains critical to U.S. defense priorities.
