Free Entry to National Parks on New Dates

The Trump administration is reportedly shifting policies to allow free entry to national parks on certain days, including President Donald Trump’s birthday. However, this coming change involves removing Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth as free admission days, which has sparked backlash from civil rights advocates.

While it’s common for presidents to adjust such lists, the recent alterations have drawn criticism from various quarters, particularly from civil rights leaders. They argue that these deletions diminish the significance of holidays that celebrate the history and contributions of Black Americans.

In the revised schedule for 2026, the alignment with established observances of civil rights and public lands is notably absent. Earlier selections included key dates like Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Juneteenth, National Public Lands Day, and a kickoff for National Parks Week. Now, all these commemorations are being omitted.

Instead, the administration is emphasizing dates with historical significance to the president himself. For instance, Trump’s birthday, which coincides with Flag Day on June 14, will kick off the free admission days, joined by Constitution Day and the anniversary of the National Park Service.

Other national holidays, like Presidents Day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day, will also see some events converted into officially recognized federal holidays. Interestingly, Veterans Day is the only date retained from the previous year’s schedule, marking a significant reshaping of the holiday calendar.

Some civil rights leaders have actively spoken against this change. Kristen Brengel from the National Park Conservation Association expressed concerns about omitting Martin Luther King Jr. Day, highlighting its importance as a day of service for many community organizations that volunteer in parks.

Senator Catherine Cortez Masto from Nevada also chimed in on social media, emphasizing that last year both MLK Jr. Day and Juneteenth were days of free admission. She criticized the decision to replace these significant holidays with Trump’s birthday, arguing that the changes do not reflect the values our country should uphold.
