Trump details immigration policy following National Guard shooting

Trump Tightens Immigration Controls After DC Shootings

President Trump has responded to the recent tragic shooting of two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., by emphasizing new immigration policies. In a post on Truth Social, he cited a federal law that enables the president to impose restrictions on immigration for national security reasons.

Specifically, Trump referenced Section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which grants him the authority to suspend the entry of non-U.S. nationals if their admission is seen as harmful to the nation’s interests. He stated, “If the President determines that the admission of any alien or alien of any kind to the United States is detrimental to the interests of the United States, the President may…suspend the admission as immigrants or nonimmigrants.”

This move comes on the heels of the shooting deaths in D.C., which has prompted the administration to step up immigration enforcement. Following the incident, Trump claimed he would halt immigration from “Third World countries,” rescind admissions established by the Biden administration, and expel foreign nationals he views as threats to public safety or incompatible with American values.

He pointed out that the current immigration system is failing and expressed a desire for a complete overhaul. This includes cutting federal benefits for noncitizens, stripping citizenship from those accused of threatening “domestic tranquility,” and increasing deportations. In a further development, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced a suspension of all asylum decisions.

Rahmanullah Rakanwar, a 29-year-old Afghan national, has been arrested in connection with the shootings. Tragically, National Guardsman Sarah Beckstrom, age 20, has died as a result, while Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains critically injured.
