Trump Orders Nuclear Weapons Testing
On Wednesday, President Trump revealed that he has instructed the military to begin testing nuclear weapons “immediately,” in reaction to the increasing nuclear capabilities of Russia and China.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “As other countries have testing programs, I have directed the Department of the Army to begin testing our nuclear weapons equally.” He further emphasized that the process would start right away.
The last nuclear explosion test conducted by the United States dates back to 1992, and such testing has been suspended voluntarily since then.
While Russia and China have not publicly carried out nuclear tests since the 1990s, there are suspicions that China might have conducted some low-level tests in secret recently.
Additionally, Russian President Vladimir Putin hasn’t excluded the possibility of future nuclear tests and has recently taken pride in testing missiles and torpedoes capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
Trump noted, “The United States has more nuclear weapons than any other nation,” attributing this to his first term’s efforts, which included significant upgrades to existing weapons.
He expressed hesitation about restarting nuclear testing, saying, “I didn’t want to do it because it was so destructive, but I had no other choice. Russia is a distant second and China is a distant third, but within five years they will be on par.” This reflects his deep concern about the evolving global nuclear landscape.
During his 2024 campaign, Trump often referred to nuclear weapons as the “N-word” due to their hazardous nature. He also recalled that his late uncle, John Trump, a professor at MIT, had taught him about the immense power of nuclear technology.
This announcement coincides with a critical meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for Wednesday in South Korea.
