Trump encounters backlash from MAGA supporters for stating he will allow 600,000 Chinese students into the US

Trump faces MAGA backlash for saying he'll let 600,000 Chinese students into US

Protests have emerged among some of President Trump’s supporters following his announcement that he intends to permit 600,000 Chinese students to study in the United States.

During a meeting with the South Korean president, Trump emphasized the importance of U.S.-China relations, stating, “We’ll get along well with China.” He reiterated the significance of allowing these students, saying, “It’s very important, 600,000 students. It’s very important.”

This marks a notable change from earlier this year when Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated intentions to “actively” revoke visas for Chinese students linked to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in crucial fields.

Trump’s willingness to welcome a large influx of Chinese students has sparked backlash among some within his base. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) expressed her disagreement, stating, “We should not invite 600,000 Chinese students to American universities that are loyal to the CCP.” She questioned, “Why are we allowing them to replace opportunities for American students?” and stressed the need for more trade school graduates.

Far-right activist Laura Loomer, a strong Trump supporter, voiced her discontent on social media, arguing that these students could be viewed as spies, saying, “No one… wants 600,000 Chinese ‘students,’ aka Communist spies.” She also referenced the COVID-19 pandemic by claiming, “China has killed 1.2 million Americans,” and questioned if these students would be seen as replacements for Americans.

Michael Flynn Jr., the son of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, expressed disappointment with Trump’s stance, saying, “It’s not what I voted for.” Meanwhile, Laura Ingraham, a Fox News host, raised similar concerns during a segment with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, asking, “How do you allow 600,000 students from a communist country?”

Lutnick countered by asserting there aren’t actually 600,000 Chinese students enrolled, suggesting that American students are attending better schools as a result of a shortage of foreign students. He added, “The bottom 15% of universities will be out of business in the U.S.”

Trump’s comments coincided with his efforts to strengthen ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid ongoing trade negotiations, even as substantial tariffs were imposed earlier this year but have since seen reductions during talks. He mentioned a desire to visit China later in the year.
