Trump Faces Backlash Over H-1B Visa Comments
President Donald Trump has sparked criticism from his “Make America Great Again” supporters after reigniting the debate surrounding H-1B visas, a contentious topic within his party.
This visa program permits U.S. companies to employ highly skilled foreign workers for up to six years. The discussion was reignited by a recent interview Trump gave to Laura Ingraham, which aired on Tuesday. Ingraham mentioned the importance of bringing foreign talent to the United States, asserting that the homegrown talent pool is sufficient. However, Trump disagreed.
“No, you don’t. No, you don’t. You don’t have a certain talent. And people have to learn!” he expressed emphatically, citing concerns over simply hiring individuals from unemployment lines for specialized jobs.
Ingraham also defended previous remarks supporting the admission of up to 600,000 Chinese students into U.S. educational institutions, arguing that this could help prevent financial strain on American universities.
Supporters of the H-1B program claim it is vital for maintaining America’s global competitiveness, while detractors argue that it undermines domestic job opportunities. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) quickly voiced her opposition, reiterating her commitment to prioritizing American workers.
“I believe in the American people,” Greene stated. “I am firmly opposed to you being replaced by foreign workers like H-1Bs.” She added that admitting foreign students for financial support is not beneficial.
Other Republicans echoed Greene’s concerns, suggesting that the policy could jeopardize Republican prospects in the upcoming midterm elections. Anthony Sabatini, a Florida county commissioner, described the situation as “insane,” predicting significant losses for the party.
The White House responded by highlighting an announcement from the Trump administration regarding a new requirement for companies seeking H-1B visas to pay a $100,000 annual fee. They also noted the launch of Project Firewall by the Department of Labor to prevent misuse of the H-1B visa process.
White House Press Secretary Taylor Rogers defended the administration’s stance, asserting that it seeks to protect American workers by ensuring that H-1B visas are utilized for highly skilled positions, rather than low-wage labor.
This issue has been historically polarizing among Trump’s supporters, especially since Trump himself endorsed the H-1B visa program in a December 2024 interview with the New York Post, referring to it as a “great program.” Hints of discontent within the MAGA base surfaced when figures like Steve Bannon criticized the program, labeling it a “scam.”
Bannon has voiced his strong objections to what he perceives as an exploitation of the immigration system by tech companies, claiming that it has created widespread anger among the American public.
On the other side of the aisle, critics like Senator Bernie Sanders have expressed their concerns, arguing that the H-1B program primarily serves to displace American workers and lower wages.
