Trump ends UN-supported initiative for a worldwide climate change tax, labeling it a 'scam'

The Trump administration intervened to stop a campaign led by a United Nations-backed organization that aimed to convince nations to implement a global carbon tax.

This tax was designed to lessen reliance on industries that produce carbon and to support policies addressing “climate change.”

“The United States does not support or comply with this Global Green New Shipping Fraud Tax in any way, shape, or form.”

Advocates thought the tax would gain approval at the International Maritime Organization summit in London, but discussions faltered when the US State Department signaled possible repercussions. President Trump also voiced his frustrations on social media, stating his discontent over the voting on a global carbon tax in London.

“I am outraged that the International Maritime Organization is voting in London this week to pass a global carbon tax,” he expressed in a post.

“The United States does not support or comply with this Global Green New Shipping Fraud Tax in any way, shape, or form,” he reiterated, adding, “We will not accept higher costs for American consumers or the establishment of a Green New fraud bureaucracy to fund their green aspirations. Stand with America and vote no in London tomorrow!”

The tax had received initial approval in April and was anticipated to pass on Friday. Following fierce opposition from the US, Singapore suggested delaying the vote. The organization plans to reconvene in a year to evaluate “fraudulent” tax measures globally.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also criticized the tax proposal.

“This week, the United Nations is moving toward passing the first global carbon tax, which will raise energy, food, and fuel costs worldwide,” he posted on social media.

“We will not allow the United Nations to tax American citizens and businesses,” Rubio affirmed. “Under @POTUS’s leadership, the United States firmly states NO. We urge other nations to unite with us to safeguard our people and sovereignty.”
