Trump Comments on Stephen A. Smith as Potential Presidential Candidate
President Donald Trump expressed that sports commentator Stephen A. Smith could be a notable choice for Democrats if he decides to enter the presidential primary.
During a live town hall on News Nation, moderated by Chris Cuomo, Trump discussed various sensitive topics. The conversation touched on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as funding for historically black colleges and universities. O’Reilly, one of the hosts, took the opportunity to ask Trump what advice he might offer Smith regarding a potential presidential run.
Trump responded positively, saying, “No. Stephen A., he’s a good guy.” Instead of providing counsel, he lauded Smith’s entertainment abilities, highlighting the importance of his appeal to audiences. “He’s a smart guy. I love watching him. People are really tuning in to him,” Trump remarked.
He suggested that, compared to other Democratic candidates, Smith might represent a stronger option, as many of the current contenders seem lacking. “A lot of these Democrats I see don’t seem to stand a chance. I’ve been pretty good at identifying candidates,” he observed.
Cuomo humorously interjected, expressing his hope that Smith wouldn’t actually run, as he appreciates him. “All I have to do is save the country,” Trump reiterated, emphasizing a broader agenda.
Touching on unity in the country, Trump referenced his support among Hispanic voters in border states as a sign of success. “America needs to be great again,” he added.
Meanwhile, Smith’s aspirations are met with skepticism even from friends. NBA commentator Charles Barkley initially considered the idea of Smith running as a joke, but as it gained traction, he urged his friend to reconsider. “Now, stop it. Come on. It had to start as a joke, and he started taking it seriously,” Barkley remarked.
