Trump and Mayor Mamdani Meet at Gracie Mansion
During a gathering at Gracie Mansion in New York City, President Donald Trump expressed optimism about Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a Democrat, stating he believes Mamdani has the “potential” to be a “great mayor,” despite their past political differences.
After their meeting, they addressed reporters on the mansion’s lawn, where Trump referred to Gracie Mansion as a “special place” while sharing insights from their discussion.
Despite their contentious history—Trump has frequently called Mamdani a “Communist lunatic,” and Mamdani has labeled Trump a “fascist”—the meeting reportedly maintained a cordial tone.
“Every time the president and I talk, we discuss the same issues,” Mamdani said. “It’s about improving the lives of New Yorkers and finding ways to address the rising cost of living and boost the economy, ultimately building a better New York.”
“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m willing to collaborate with anyone, regardless of their political affiliation or our disagreements on other matters. Anyone who’s ready to help relieve the burdens of New Yorkers,” the mayor added.
Trump expressed that he feels at home in Gracie Mansion, having visited many times before.
“I’ve been here quite a bit over the years,” he noted. “It feels like a home, a really special place. I’ve seen various mayors come and go—some were great, others not so much—and I truly hope you’ll be a great one,” Trump told Mamdani.
When asked about any concrete outcomes from their discussions, Mamdani highlighted the focus on moving forward with plans to build a deck over Sunnyside Yard, a substantial active rail yard in Queens, a project that has been in the works since 2015.
“We talked about increasing housing availability in New York City, particularly regarding Sunnyside Yard,” Mamdani shared. “It’s great to see we’ve agreed to initiate a new phase of dialogue involving our housing and operations team from City Hall and the White House.”
“We truly appreciated discussing how we can work towards lowering the cost of living for New Yorkers,” he added.
President Trump wrapped up the meeting by voicing hope that Mayor Mamdani will rise above challenges to better his city.
“I genuinely hope he’ll be a good mayor,” Trump stated. “What’s beneficial for New York and the country is what I want. I see potential in him to be a great mayor.”
This meeting marked the first time a sitting president has visited the mayoral residence since 1981, when Ronald Reagan met with Mayor Ed Koch to advocate for federal funding for local infrastructure.
