Trump Seeks Ceasefire in Gaza Ahead of Netanyahu Visit

On Tuesday, President Trump announced his efforts to negotiate a ceasefire in Gaza and establish a hostage agreement, just before welcoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House.

Earlier in the week, Trump encouraged Israel to “contract in Gaza,” expressing hope that Netanyahu would present a concrete plan during his visit scheduled for July 7th.

“I hope that happens. I’m looking for it to happen sometime next week,” Trump shared with reporters.

The two leaders are expected to address the ongoing conflict in Gaza and what Trump describes as a “great success with Iran.”

Trump has stressed the urgency of releasing hostages, stating, “I want to get the hostages back.”

He urged Netanyahu to bring the nearly 20-month-long war to an end, but the prime minister has consistently maintained that the campaign will only conclude once Hamas is fully dismantled.

The Israeli military estimates that around 20 Israeli hostages remain alive in Gaza, while the remains of approximately 30 others have also been accounted for.

Recent military actions have retrieved several bodies, including those of Israeli-American hostages.

Among the remaining captives are the remains of Israeli Defense Force soldiers along with Illa Chen, 19, and Omer Nutra, 22, both of whom have families residing in New York.

Hamas has indicated a willingness to resume discussions regarding ceasefires and hostage exchanges through Egyptian and Qatari mediators, although this is contingent on Israel’s agreement to the ultimate goals of the war.

Netanyahu’s supporters view this condition as unacceptable.
