Trump Strikes Deal Expanding US Security Role in Greenland
President Donald Trump has transitioned from previously aggressive posturing to securing a new security agreement with Denmark and Greenland. This deal is intended to grant the United States what he describes as “permanent control” over Greenland’s security, effectively broadening the U.S. military presence on the island.
However, before it can take effect, the agreement must still be approved by lawmakers in both Denmark and Greenland. The specifics haven’t been fully released, but officials indicate it will keep Denmark in charge of Greenland while preventing countries like China and Russia from establishing military bases or making significant investments on the island.
Greenland often lacks global attention, yet as Arctic ice continues to melt and major powers vie for influence, the island has emerged as a strategic asset. As a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, it hosts an essential U.S. military base and is situated near new shipping lanes and vital mineral resources.
With around 56,000 residents living mostly in small towns along the coast, the island’s vast interior remains largely uninhabited, over 80% of it covered by an ice sheet. Interestingly, despite its small population, Greenland is nearly as large as Alaska and Texas combined.
Geographically, Greenland’s position off Canada’s northeastern coast places it right at the center of Arctic defense strategies. The U.S. has maintained a military outpost at Pituffik Space Base in northwestern Greenland since 1953, which is currently managed by the U.S. Space Force. Meanwhile, Russia also has military sites in the vicinity, and China has been pushing for greater access since designating itself a “near-Arctic state” a few years ago.
As the Arctic continues to warm, new shipping routes are developing around Greenland that could potentially shorten trade routes between North America, Europe, and Asia.
This shifting scenario is drawing renewed attention to Greenland’s rare earth elements and other crucial minerals that are essential for technology, renewable energy, and military applications.
Rare earth elements play a critical role in high-performance magnets found in electric vehicles, wind turbines, and precision-guided systems like missiles and radar. Yet, it’s important to note that China currently dominates the global rare-earth supply chain, holding about 60% of mining and more than 90% of processing capabilities. With the U.S. and European Union aiming to reduce reliance on Beijing, Greenland is becoming a significant player in this context.
While Trump’s agreement may not completely realize his earlier ambitions of placing Greenland under U.S. control, it still stands to enhance Washington’s military and strategic presence in the Arctic.
As competition over shipping lanes, defense positioning, and critical mineral access intensifies, Greenland’s significance appears poised to increase.
