Trump gives a major speech on the Iran war as his approval ratings decline

President Donald Trump addressed the nation in a prime-time speech on Wednesday, which the White House described as a “substantial update” regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran.

This announcement came during a month marked by U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran, a situation that’s increasingly unpopular among Americans, particularly due to rising gas prices stemming from the conflict, which have contributed to a dip in Trump’s approval ratings.

The political landscape looks challenging. The president’s decreasing popularity correlates with the Iranian strikes and highlights a growing concern for the Republican party as they aim to maintain their slim majorities in the upcoming midterm elections.

Recent polling data from Fox News, conducted between March 20-23, indicated Trump’s approval rating sitting at 41%, while his disapproval at 59%. This widening gap, now at an 18-point difference, is up from a 14-point margin noted in an earlier survey that coincided with the onset of the Iranian attacks.

The latest findings from various polling organizations, including Reuters/Ipsos and Quinnipiac University, show Trump’s approval falling into the upper 30s, with disapproval ratings ranging between the high 50s and low 60s. A CNN poll released recently noted approval rates varying between 35% and 64%.

On average, polling reflects a disapproval rate just over 40%, with some measures placing it in the low 50s. Notably, while Trump has maintained solid support from his core base concerning the war, the diminishing backing appears to stem mainly from within the Republican Party, especially among those not aligned with Trump’s more extreme faction.

Daron Shaw, a seasoned Republican pollster, pointed out a noticeable decline in support among moderate Republicans, indicating a downward trend in recent polling.

One significant factor potentially impacting Trump’s standing is the surge in gas prices. As of Tuesday, average gasoline prices in the U.S. exceeded $4 per gallon for the first time in four years, according to reports from AAA and GasBuddy.

The military actions by the U.S. and Israel have resulted in substantial casualties in Iran, including the death of its Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, and the crippling of its military forces. In retaliation, Iran has conducted missile and drone assaults on energy infrastructures across various Persian Gulf nations, complicating shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz, which contributes to about 20% of the global oil supply. This situation has exacerbated the rise in fuel prices worldwide.

As public dissatisfaction with rising living costs grows, President Trump is facing increasing pressure regarding the economy. His previous focus on inflation played a crucial role in securing victories for the Republican Party in the 2024 elections.

Conversely, Democrats have capitalized on issues of affordability amid rising inflation, achieving impressive results in various elections in the past 14 months since Trump regained the presidency.

According to a Fox News poll, an overwhelming 80% of participants expressed concern regarding gas prices, with 86% worried about inflation. Additionally, a CNN poll highlighted that Trump’s economic approval rating has plunged to a record low of 31%.

Despite these challenges, the White House maintains that the spike in fuel costs is temporary. Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt stated that once “Operation Epic Fury” concludes, gas prices would revert to previous low levels.

These rising costs seem to give Democrats additional leverage against their Republican counterparts. Recent communications from the Democratic National Committee have drawn attention to soaring gas prices, even launching ads that directly blame “DC Republicans” for the increase.

While Democrats face their own branding challenges, with their public image sinking to historic lows in recent polls, there are indications that the anti-Trump sentiment hasn’t swayed many voters away from their neutral stance.

In an interview, Texas Senator Ted Cruz emphasized the significance of Trump’s military decision, calling it one of the most crucial of his presidency.

As Trump delivers his message to the nation, it’s evident that public interest lies in understanding the direction of the war. Dan Everhart, an oil CEO and Republican donor, remarked that while Trump’s base continues to support him, many everyday Americans question the necessity of the conflict. He noted that this moment presents an opportunity for the president to clarify the importance of the war to the general public.
