Trump Optimistic About Potential Peace Deal Between Russia and Ukraine
During a recent discussion at the UN General Assembly in New York, President Donald Trump conveyed his belief that Russia and Ukraine may be on the verge of reaching a peace agreement, stating that “something is going to happen.”
The conflict began in 2014 with Russia’s annexation of Crimea and escalated into a larger war following the significant Russian invasion in February 2022.
While appearing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump was hesitant to provide specifics about their conversation when asked if he still believed in Ukraine’s ability to reclaim all its territory.
“I think they’re going to make a deal, and I don’t want to say what the deal is,” he remarked. “We talk about it a lot, including with President Putin, and I think something’s going to happen.”
Trump also mentioned ongoing discussions concerning the Iran conflict, suggesting that negotiations could yield a beneficial deal while cautioning about potential serious repercussions if they do not. He noted a productive meeting had taken place, but the actual outcome remains to be seen.
During the session, Trump underscored the capabilities of the people involved in the Ukraine talks, expressing confidence in their progress. “We’ll be talking about that now. Very capable people. Really amazingly capable people,” he stated.
The U.S. president expressed satisfaction with his personal rapport with Zelensky, describing it as “very good.”
“We have a very good relationship going, the two of us,” Trump stated. “The president and I are trying to figure out the solution, and I think it’s going to happen. I really do,” he added about the interaction between Zelensky and Putin. “But certainly, it’s to their advantage to make a deal.”
He characterized the bond between Washington and Ukraine as “very strong,” highlighting a broader strength that extends throughout Europe.
“The relationship is very strong, and with Europe it’s very strong,” he commented, referencing a recent significant security agreement with Greenland as “something very special.” He concluded that those involved could take pride in their efforts, regardless of the eventual outcome. “We’ll see what happens. But these are very, very talented people.”
