Potential U.S. Operation to Seize Kharg Island

Military analysts are revisiting the idea of a U.S. operation to capture Kharg Island, a key location that processes about 90% of Iran’s oil exports and is central to U.S. strategies against Iran.

This topic resurfaced recently after President Trump mentioned the possibility of taking control of the island during an interview. He expressed caution, stating that he didn’t want to reveal plans that might be detrimental to military strategy. Trump highlighted that oil facilities are integral to the global economy and have been spared in past military actions.

Defining Victory Against Iran

Retired Lt. Gen. Robert Harward discussed potential strategies for an operation. He suggested that U.S. forces could launch amphibious assaults while Navy and Air Force units secure the area, offering Iranian defenders a chance to surrender prior to a larger conflict. The aim is not solely to capture the island but also to preserve its oil infrastructure for a future government.

Harward emphasized the importance of minimizing risk not only for U.S. troops but also for civilians and infrastructure, which might eventually be handed over to a new Iranian regime focused on its citizens rather than political expansion.

Trump’s comments align with this perspective, indicating that maintaining the Kharg oil facility would be a significant military goal. He explained that past orders directed military actions to avoid damaging oil exports, underscoring the potential global repercussions of striking these facilities.

Challenges in Capturing Kharg Island

Experts warn that seizing Kharg could be merely the straightforward part of the operation. The island, spanning just eight square miles and located a short distance from Iran’s coast, is vulnerable to missile and drone attacks. Although analysts believe U.S. forces could quickly capture it, ongoing retaliation from Iranian ground forces could lead to a protracted conflict, heightening the risk of broader war.

Historically, Kharg has been pivotal due to its proximity to the coast, used by British forces in the 19th century and selected for its deepwater terminal to facilitate oil exports starting in 1960.

Nicholas Karl from the American Enterprise Institute raised concerns regarding Iran’s extensive investment in defense capabilities designed to deter U.S. intervention. These include cruise missiles, drones, and fast attack vessels, all aimed at counteracting U.S. naval superiority.

Misclassification of Military Objective

Some military analysts argue that Kharg may not be the most strategic target. For instance, Mark Fox, a former vice admiral, noted that other smaller islands in the region could offer more tactical advantages and significantly complicate Tehran’s strategic planning.

Harward, however, believes the challenge of securing Kharg extends beyond the immediate military mission. He emphasized that true stability in the region can only be achieved through a government in Iran that prioritizes the needs of its people over ideological goals, calling for an end to nuclear ambitions and regional aggression.
