Trump hits Harris on border ahead of VP's visit

Former President Trump used a last-minute incident in New York City to attack Vice President Harris over immigration and border security, the day before she was scheduled to visit the US southern border.

“For nearly four years, we have been living through the worst border crisis in the history of the world,” President Trump said Thursday during a last-minute appearance at Trump Tower in New York.

“There has never been anything like this that has brought untold suffering, misery and death to our land. Kamala Harris is the architect of this destruction.”

The former president referred to Harris as the Republicans' nickname for “border czar” over some of the Biden administration's decisions on immigration, including halting border wall construction and granting temporary “parole” for asylum seekers. He blamed Harris. They thought about what it would be like when they were waiting for immigration processing and when they were being detained.

“She has ordered an immediate halt to border wall construction,” Trump claimed, and at another point said, “She has instituted catch-and-release across the entire southern border.”

“She probably did the worst job in the history of not just the border, but any border,” Trump said. “She keeps talking about wanting to fix the border. We just ask: Why didn't she fix it four years ago?”

In his remarks, he also cited Aurora, Colorado, and Springfield, Ohio, two municipalities where President Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (Ohio), have pushed unsubstantiated claims about immigration. Published on. His comments prompted Republicans, including Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, to challenge those claims.

Trump's comments came a day before Harris was scheduled to fly to Douglas, Arizona, to visit the US southern border.

Mr. Trump has made immigration an explicit focus of his 2024 campaign and is trying to claim he is tougher than Ms. Harris on immigration and border security. Meanwhile, the vice president blamed President Trump for the failure of a bipartisan border bill and touted his background as a former California attorney general.

She also aired an ad promoting herself as “tough” at the border.

In an interview with MSNBC's Stephanie Ruhl on Wednesday, she was asked what the Harris administration plans to do to help communities that are at capacity due to large numbers of immigrants, and she spoke out against President Trump over the bipartisan border bill. attacked.

“Donald Trump found out about this bill, realized it would solve the problem he wanted to address, and told them to kill it. Don't put it to a vote. actually killed a bill that should have died because he wants to solve the problem, not solve it,” Harris said.

“And that's part of what needs to be addressed,” she continued. “And my oath is that if I am elected president, if the American people support me, I will bring that bill back and sign it into law. We need a comprehensive plan that includes what we need to do to not just strengthen, but strengthen our policies.''Our borders are important, but we need to create a path for people to gain citizenship. Also address the fact that there is. ”

The Hill has reached out to Harris' campaign for additional comment.
