Trump holds rally in Georgia as backlash from the Iran war and increasing gas prices grow

Supporters of Trump in Georgia are rallying behind him, especially with worries about rising costs and gas prices linked to the ongoing conflict in Iran. One voter even referred to him as the “best president” of her lifetime.

Despite Trump’s approval rating sitting at 36% and a disapproval rate of 64%, enthusiasm was evident in Perry, Georgia, where he campaigned alongside Rick Jackson, a Republican gubernatorial candidate, and Rep. Mike Collins, who’s aiming to unseat Sen. Jon Ossoff. The state witnesses significant contention for Ossoff’s seat, which he narrowly won in January 2021 by less than 55,000 votes. Interestingly, Trump had won Georgia in 2024 by a margin of 2.2%, urging voters to act as if he were on the ballot for the upcoming election.

Gloria Barkman, attending the rally, expressed her support because she believes Trump fulfills his commitments. “Sure, people are frustrated with the current gas prices and all, but I think if we just give him a bit more time, things will improve,” she remarked.

Gas prices in Georgia are around $3.66 per gallon, a significant rise from $2.72 in February, before the conflict with Iran escalated. The war has undoubtedly impacted global oil markets, leading to higher prices worldwide, while many Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of the situation.

Jim Taylor, an Air Force veteran at the rally, insisted that the higher fuel costs are, perhaps, a necessary short-term sacrifice to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons. “As a military veteran, I appreciate what he’s trying to do in Iran, despite the criticism he faces,” Taylor shared.

During the rally, Trump assured attendees that oil prices would decline soon and highlighted a recent inflation rate of 1.7% over the last quarter. Yet, data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that the annual CPI inflation rate stood at 3.7% as of September.

Supporter TJ Barb praised Trump for establishing Trump Accounts, which are aimed at introducing financial literacy to children. “It’s an important step for our kids,” he commented. Barkman underscored her commitment to voting to protect the country’s integrity, stating she’s all in for Trump and the Republican cause.

Taylor described the upcoming elections as a tough challenge, expressing that even though he hadn’t known Collins well before, Trump’s endorsement makes a significant impact. He remarked, “I’d vote for anyone Trump backs; I think Mike’s a solid candidate.” Barb agreed, even though he admitted unfamiliarity with Collins prior to this election cycle, he trusts Trump’s judgment in his endorsements.

Barb continued, “Collins’ background resonates with everyday folks. He has a relatable, hardworking persona.” Meanwhile, John Salvesen, the Republican nominee for Georgia’s 5th Congressional District, echoed his support for Collins, emphasizing their common hardworking backgrounds.

Salvesen criticized Ossoff, claiming Collins is the superior candidate provided he reaches the right audience. Barkman also commended Collins for his voting record during his tenure in the House. “He has always impressed me; he’s warm and engaging with people,” she concluded.

Collins’ spokesperson stated he’s honored to have Trump’s backing and is diligently working to earn the trust of Georgian voters, emphasizing his legislative achievements and ability to collaborate across party lines to enhance safety and prosperity in Georgia.
